Digestion and Depression: The Men’s Guide to Good Eating

If you’re like most guys, eating is a no-brainer. Get the most delicious thing you can find in the easiest proximity to you. Proceed to enjoy.

It seems like women are the ones who spend their time reading up on the latest in nutrition. Men don’t prioritize it quite as much or as often. But, it could be the one of, if not the biggest factor in not only your physical health, but your mental wellbeing too.

Brain or Gut? How Food Affects You.

Of course we all know now that processed foods are “bad” for us. There are many reasons why:

  • Too much sodium
  • Too much sugar
  • Chemicals of unknown harm
  • Also just plain gross (Think not? Check these out and let me know how you feel!)

But, did you know that besides all that, processed foods literally wreak havoc on your brain similarly to hardcore drugs? Yup.

  • Wheat: Creates the same chemicals in the brain as heroin and morphine
  • Sugar: Creates a swell of dopamine five times the normal level
  • Diet Soda: Creates an increased risk of depression by over 30%
  • Snack Bars: Creates false illusion of healthiness, increases risk of diabetes

During research for this article, we found even more alarming facts including this one:

“Processed food manufacturers like Kraft and Nestlé hire teams of scientists to create edible substances that achieve the bliss point — that perfect blend of salt, fat, sugar, and additives that makes a food intentionally addictive.”

Okay, so you get it. No bueno. But, here’s where the connection really hits home. Did you know that 95 percent of your serotonin is produced in your gastrointestinal tract? So, not only does what you eat affect your body physically, but you can actually enhance your emotional wellbeing by what you eat too.

Experts recommend lots of fruits and veggies, rice and grains, lean meat and fermented foods (think pickles, kombucha, sauerkraut, etc.). The fermented foods help create “good bacteria” in your gut. It’s right where you want ‘em to maintain a happy feeling in your belly and brain.

And, another piece of advice: To maintain your healthy eating, don’t think about it too hard. Had a big breakfast? Eat something light for lunch or go for a piece of fruit. Not feeling like a salad for dinner? Have the burger. Go “bun-less” or skip the fries. Even small choices make a big difference. Go ahead and give it a try.
